Roll in the 2nd investigation.
Headed by Brendon Podmore and Sarah Newland, Rio Tinto's housing leaders, this was a genuine attempt to try and sweep this away. From using out of date bio tapes (used for mold testing) and as effective as the previous Sellotape method, air monitoring for only 4 hours- over a month after the hole was patched (great job freezing the scene guys), telling the independent specialists that the hole was on the "return" side of the air conditioning ducting, even after I repeatedly told them otherwise, even drew them a diagram, they knew what they were doing and made sure this formed the basis of their report. It was an outright lie. Deception. Cover up.
Tested in the stupidest places, underside of a rug, in the filter side of the aircon unit, on the flat side of an enamel door, on the roof, on a wiped down picture frame.
No tests done on furniture, tables, bench tops, only 10 one-inch squared tests through a whole house.
When the reports come back, one recommendation was to clean the ceiling space, they ignored this, instead they tried to divert attention and focus on a cable pit on the property's boundary. They did admit they had a $20,000 quote to clean our belongings with a class A asbestos specialist which they later retracted and when I told them I felt they were trying to
"coverup" the harm that had been done and the potential future harm, Brendon Podmore took offence, it's clear now why!
On the 23rd of December Sarah Newland tried to send my family back into the contaminated house, or we could move our contaminated belongings to another house in Pannawonica, 2 days
out from Xmas, oh and she said she had put our family on the Asbestos register for the next 20 years, even though they found no asbestos (with their deliberately faulty testing methods again) except in the ceiling cavity. Seems strange. Also, she told us to go and call Beyond Blue if we were having trouble. Very helpful. Merry Christmas to you too Sarah.
We knew now what was going on.
The only positive part of this whole investigation was Brendon and Sarah agreeing in a recorded meeting at the same time all the above was discussed that if we wanted an independent asbestos testing company-Microanalysis to go through then Rio Tinto would pay for it. It turned out that this fumbled offer gave us the truth in the end…. there is more to this, we will cover later.
